What is Speech & Mental Delay?
Speech-mental developmental delay (SMD) and intellectual disability (ID) are two different stories often confused at the start. SMD is a lag in speech and comprehension relative to age norms; with adequate therapy most such children catch up. ID is a stable reduction in intellectual functioning (IQ below 70) with difficulties in daily life, manifesting before age 18. ICD-10 codes this group as F70–F73 (ID severity) and F80.9 (speech disorder). Global developmental delay affects 1–3% of children.
